Paws for a Cause – Interview with Marketing Communications Specialist, Lisa Coelho

Published June 14, 2024

We spotlight Lisa Coelho, our Marketing Communications Specialist at the company, who is also a dedicated volunteer at CLAWS Shelter. Since joining our team Lisa has excelled in her role, while simultaneously dedicating her weekends to the care and rehabilitation of cats in Malta. Her story is a testament to the personal and communal impact of volunteering. Read below to see how important volunteering is for Lisa.

  1. Please tell us about your career journey at Arringo so far.

My time at Arringo began in June 2023 when I joined as a Marketing Communications Specialist. It’s been a great journey so far, filled with opportunities to contribute significantly within my team. We all share a strong synergy, making every workday not only efficient but also enjoyable. This positive atmosphere helps me balance my professional responsibilities with my passion for volunteering.

  1. Which shelter are you volunteering at, and what is the mission of the shelter?

For about six months, I have been volunteering at CLAWS Shelter here in Malta. The mission of the shelter is to help reduce the number of stray, homeless, and abandoned cats on the island. It’s a mission that resonates deeply with me and one that drives all of us at the shelter to do our best every day.

  1. What inspired you to start volunteering at the shelter?

I've always been keen on helping animals, especially those in vulnerable situations. Learning about CLAWS and how effectively they manage with limited resources, inspired me to get involved. The owner’s dedication, knowing each of the over thirty cats by name, showed me how much one person's care can make a difference.

  1. How does a typical day at the shelter look for you?

On Saturday evenings, my responsibilities begin with organising any students who come to help or need training. I check on all the cats, looking for new arrivals and noting any special care they might need. After cleaning cages, litter boxes, and floors, I feed all the cats, starting with those in communal areas and then those in individual cages who may need medicine or special diets. I always try to find time to interact and play with the cats, especially the kittens, as socialisation boosts their chances of adoption.

  1. How does volunteering contribute to your personal growth and fulfilment?

Volunteering has been a step towards fulfilling a lifelong dream of mine to open my own shelter. It has helped me understand the complexities of shelter management and the importance of teamwork. These experiences have enhanced my professional skills at Arringo, teaching me valuable lessons in cooperation and empathy.

  1. Can you share a memorable moment from your volunteering experience that has had a lasting impact on you?

Every moment at CLAWS is memorable, but seeing a once-traumatised cat begin to trust and engage with people again is particularly rewarding. It’s these transformations that remind me of the impact we can have through persistent and compassionate care.

  1. Do you have a favourite cat at the shelter?

Yes, I do. Her name is The Turkish. She is a rescue cat from Turkey and has been at the shelter since my first week. Initially, she was very scared and wouldn’t interact with anyone. Over time, with patience and care, she began to venture out and integrate with the other cats.

Lisa Coelho’s journey as a volunteer at CLAWS Shelter highlights the transformative power of dedication and compassion, both for the volunteers and for those they help.

At Arringo, we are inspired by Lisa’s commitment and encourage our team to take part in volunteer work, supported by our Volunteer Time-Off program. Her experience beautifully illustrates how personal fulfilment and professional life can intertwine through acts of service. Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your inspiring story and for your continued dedication to making a difference.
